From the Author

The idea for this collection of 101 extraordinary tales from the Kruger National Park arose purely from envy. I have never considered myself particularly lucky in the Park - but then nor have I had the misadventure of a breakdown, a close shave or an animal attack. I am, however, always flabbergasted by the tales of other visitors, recounted - with perhaps a smattering of exaggeration - in rest camps in the evenings, or shared through open car windows when I've asked, 'Seen anything interesting today?' Surely, I thought, others would be as interested as I am in the tales of those for whom Kruger has dealt a more thrilling hand? When I first set about collecting stories for the book four years ago, I never anticipated the sheer wealth of incredible tales, accounts and anecdotes I would receive. I certainly never anticipated that the spectrum of stories would extend so much further than just animal sightings. The book this has become is an entirely different beast from my first humble imaginings. Much like the Park itself, the whole somehow feels greater than the sum of its parts: there are stories of heartbreak, tragedy, high jinks, disappointment and astonishing luck; there are stories from the rest camps, the dirt and tarred roads, the watering holes, the picnic spots and the walking trails; and there are funny stories, curious stories, sad stories, creepy stories and stories that you'll find almost impossible to believe. But each one, I hope, captures and shares a little of the wonder and the thrill we all feel when we pass through the gates, full of anticipation of what lies ahead, into the great expanse of one of Africa's greatest treasures.Hundreds and hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds, from across South Africa and the world, took the time and effort to open their memory vaults, pen their Kruger experiences and submit them for consideration. The criteria for selecting the stories were simple: they should all be extraordinary in one way or another; they should all take place in the Kruger National Park itself, not one of the adjoining reserves of Greater Kruger; they should only take place on any of the publicly accessible tourist roads, rest camps, picnic sites or walking trails; and importantly, they should primarily be the tales of ordinary Park visitors like you and me - not game rangers, field guides or any of the other lucky people who work and live in the Park. The result, I hope, is a celebration of Kruger and what makes it so special amongst all the national parks in Africa. That an extraordinary encounter could just as easily happen to a family in a two-door hatchback on their first sojourn into the Park as a hardened Park veteran in a dusty 4x4, or a wealthy foreign tourist on the back of an open safari vehicle, is evidence of Kruger's unique egalitarian streak. Yes, Kruger is the great safari leveller, and this book is the proof of that. Whether you dip in and out of it, or read it from cover to cover, you'll find yourself excitedly optimistic (or justifiably terrified) that the next time you're in the Park, it could be you...

In preparing to go to a South Africa I selected this book as Kruger was our main destination. The stories were so interesting and often times hilarious - especially being from everyday visitors to the park. One can learn the typical animal sighting and what's unusual in the park. I was so excited on our first day in the park to see the remains of a zebra that a leopard had pulled into the tree to eat something I knew nothing about until reading these tales. Learning the mistakes that led to mishaps I felt "better prepared" to not make the same mistakes. On my actual trip when driving into our remote lodge we encountered our first elephant and when he began shaking his head and starting to charge I knew we were in a dangerous situation and told my husband to get out of the way as quick as possible. I was hoping to not see any of the spitting Cobras and can say I saw a juvenile black mamba from the safety of our vehicle. The tales of encounters with the deadliest snake in South Africa were much more colorful so I was delighted to see one safely! If you are staying in a rest camp there are many tales to prepare you - we didn't have time to stay at a rest camp but would have loved to. Warning - do not read if you are a "worrier" as my husband. I chose not to share some of the more frightening tales as he might change his mind about going on this adventure. Use it as an introduction to the geography and animals of Kruger and to better prepare you for what you might see or encounter in the park!! I felt this read made my trip so much more enjoyable!

This book is a collection of stories about the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Each story is told by the people who experienced the events first hand – some of them are hilarious, some are barely believable and some will make you cringe in fear, but all of them capture the essence of South Africa’s most famous national park – it’s beauty, wildness and exceptional game viewing. Some of the stories are also accompanied by photographs, which further add to the enjoyment. The stories in the book are also a reminder that despite the nearly 2 million visitors to Kruger every year, it is at its heart filled with wild animals who are beautiful and astounding but ultimately unpredictable.I loved this collection of stories, it made me laugh (almost hysterically) at times, it also made me gasp in horror – in particular the picture of the python curled up over the engine of a small car… I think I also learnt a few things, the one that comes to mind is that bats like to live in thatch and snakes like to hunt bats, and the last thing you want to run into in an enclosed space is a Mozambican spitting cobra…I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Kruger and also for people who have already been lucky enough to experience all that Kruger has to offer. In fact I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good read, whether they have plans to visit the Kruger or not – it is filled with great and real stories and makes for a fun read.

A fun and interesting read, especially because I am currently living for six months about half an hour from the Punta Maria gate for northern Kruger Park. We have visited the park three times while in SA and the book adds highlights to any Kruger visit. The stories are real, true, and typical of Kruger. The book is easy to read and great for short bursts as each story is brief and stands alone. 101of them is super! I liked that the author sectioned the stories geographically because the park is huge and I was able to read about the separate areas I went to prior to going.. Obviously, a book this specific in topic will not perhaps appeal to everyone. However, I recommend it to anyone who likes animals and their interactions with humans. Makes a great bathroom reader. The book is compiled from actual people's personal experiences in their own words so is a bit unusual to its credit.

Having had the privilege of traveling from the US to Kruger National Park in South Africa numerous times I thought I had seen my share of great sightings and experienced once in a life time events in the park but Jeff Gordon has collected tales that had me gasping in astonishment, laughing out loud and even shedding a few tears. If you have been to the park, are thinking of going to the park or if you just love reading great real life stories of those who have gone before you, this is the book to read. I read it on Kindle but will definitely purchase the book in soft cover as well to add to my collection of great books!

If you haven't bought it yet you should be ashamed! 101 stories --- mostly memories of people who have had experiences in-situ --- brilliantly told in short (really short and crisp and to the point --- well done) stories about individual or family events while visiting the world's greatest wild life reserve. Some dramatic and some light-hearted, but all of them colorful and awash with the smell and sounds of --- the bush! Will some of the proceeds benefit the near-extinct Rhino? Not sure but here's hoping. My greatest fear is that soon we shall only see the rhino in zoos, and the rhino will only experience existence in cages. Kruger is the last room in Nature's House and, it needs attention.

As a frequent visitor to South African parks we found this book most entertaining and fascinating. A very good light read proving that anything can happen in the parks but one always seems to come out on the right side! It also reflects the gross stupidity of some visitors to the parks who will hopefully heed these warnings and obey the park rules in future. The reason park rules are made becomes abundantly clear as one reads through the book! We wish we could have had some of the experiences written about in the book, and are equally grateful NOT to have had some of them! We would recommend this book to anyone visiting game parks in Africa.

I have been reading Fight your Ticket about California laws for years and don't know what I would do without it. It has helped me win in court and know just what to ask the cop giving the ticket. It helps research and I recommend these books. Now my grand niece is getting her license and does not live in CA so I picked this up for her. I hope she reads it, it really helps get a handle on interactions with the police when you get stopped.

Pretty good book but in the real world it may not help you much. I decided to fight a ticket and the cop lied on the stand and I wasn't really prepared for that and the jurors were all dumb as a box of rocks and I could only choose 5 out of 30 to reject in Voir Dire. So the book has good ideas but the U.S. legal system is so jacked up that if you are a little guy you are going to have to bend over one way or another. Can't wait for the revolution, this system has to go.

Good information but not really anything that I didn't already know after driving for many years. I dont make a habit of getting speeding tickets but I will keep this on my bookshelf as a good reference in case I do.

This is a good book with lots of info. There are some things in here you NEED TO READ to just get over the hurdle of "television lawyerism" which in all good manor keeps all but the most innocent from paying for their crimes. And then there are other things within this book even seasoned lawyers would find to be useful.

A very good read, thorough and specific where required with good advice where general

I haven't read the whole thing yet but it is very well laid out and seems to cover almost any situation. I would recommend it to anyone who has gotten a ticket.

Good information
