I am a bit torn about this book.While this book is very informative, and you can learn java, I feel it lacks some real basic stuff.As I have been learning java, I first learned printing things out to the IDE console, this book starts you off creating a GUI.So, at first I thought that was great since I already new a fair amount of java, but where my real disappointment comes in is with the game panel.The book comes with a CD for you to install the game environment in which to build on, and for some that might be okay, but for me I would prefer to know how to build the whole thing from the ground up. And in order to use the code for the game panel (should you just try and wing it) you can't, you have to import the "edu.sjcny.gpv1.*;", and therefore the classes are already created for you and only work when you import the "edu.sjcny.gpv1.*;". And if you know NOTHING about classes and how they work you might be lost from the start.So, once I am able to create a game panel that looks like the one in the book (using JFrame, JButton, etc. or Window builder & Swing), I think it will work out fine, but as I stated, it would have been better (in my honest opinion), if it would have given you the code to create the game board and build from there.

This is a well written book with a great teaching approach. Using the game environment included on the book's DVD, I was able to write animated games without learning any computer graphics programming techniques. It made learning Java fun.

This book is perfect. It teaches you how I believe you SHOULD be taught Java. For the price, it is 100% worth it. Keep in mind there is over 700 pages of material. I'm teaching myself Java, and this book really has proven to be quite useful. If I am working on a tutorial I found on the web or another book, I typically find myself referring back to this book for explanations; recently this happened when I was doing a tutorial for creating a Tetris game and the code was heavy on arrays, so I went back to the chapter in this book and brushed up on multidimensional arrays.

Matt de la Pena has been one of those authors that I have been meaning to read but kept putting him on the back burner. I was reminded of him because of the most recent banned book week and I heard how his books are banned in Arizona. Latin kids shouldn't read books where characters are struggling to identify themselves with their Latin and American roots. Did I just generalize? Yeah maybe... But truly its a damn shame to ban books featuring Latino kids as main characters where actually Latinos might read said books. Anyways, getting off my soap box and back to the book review. Big mistake for putting this book on the back burner. I really enjoyed it. I could identify with the characters and the language that was spoken. As the story went along the characters grew on me and I just kept rooting for them. I really sad that this book ended because I just wanted more. I wanted to know what else happens to them. Overall it was a great book and I plan on reading more from Matt de la Pena.

my favorite book, could relate to the main character.I character has feeling and thoughts we all feel when looking at the future.He has respect for his family and even though they are related he knows theres a boundry that is obvious to them all even if they choose not to aknowleadge it.

A great text for struggling readers, Mexican Whiteboy is a great novel to recommend to younger boys who do not enjoy reading. With a lot of talk of baseball and conflict with his father, our main character Danny is a likeable kid. He leaves his mainly white, upper class neighborhood to spend the summer with his cousin in the town where his dad grew up, which is filled primarily with Mexican Americans. Danny wins the respect of the other boys because he is a really gifted baseball player. After he gets off to a rocky start with Uno, who used to be the best ball player around. Eventually, the two become friends and run hustles on kids from other neighborhoods to make some cash. Both boys deal with absent fathers and Danny deals with his identity crisis of being half-white and half-Mexican, especially when he falls in love with a young girl who only speaks Spanish, something he never learned. My favorite part of this text was the dialogue amongst the kids. De La Pena does a good job of writing teenages who speak like teenagers. I often found myself smiling while reading the kids ribbing on each other. I felt like I became part of their group of friends. Danny also deals with self-harm, which I think is a very important topic to broach with today's youth. I appreciated that Mexican Whiteboy has an example of a male dealing with self-harm, which is a struggle usually associated with girls. This text shows a likable, athletic, boy dealing with trauma and emotions, something that is often ignored or discouraged in young men. And this is a definitely a text aimed at young men. If, like me, you are not particularly interested in baseball (or even sports in general) you can often feel like the novel is dragging a little. However, I would definitely recommend it to boys, especially ones dealing with anxiety or other emotional issues. I think this text could really help a young person feel less alone.

Written from the heart and knowledge of a 'Homey" and the college of hard knox! I loved it!

This book is not only accurate in its descriptions but also does a great job of conveying the feelings of being stuck in two worlds and fitting in to either one.

I loved this book. I was reading another YA book at the same time with my English classes, but I liked this one enough that I abandoned the first book and finished this one first. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

My 12 year old son enjoyed reading & this was on our school's 7th grade reading list.

Not bad for its historic and geographical info, but generally poor coverage for places to stay and eat, and somewhat scanty and blah coverage and mapping in general of one of the most diverse and interesting states in the USA. Too bad, as it's a default purchase for many people who wonder why the serious guidebooks ignore Michigan and Detroit. Surely the state has 10 times as many interesting and beautiful places as Arizona!

I wouldn't use this book to plan your entire trip as its missing some things, but if you're looking for some extra information or maps, this book is very helpful to have on your trip!

I really loved this book. I thought it was easy to read and had relevant information.

The day to day conflicts that cross the organizational leader's desk are readily addressed by use of the strategies found on the pages of this book. Read it and read it again and again.

This is a must read for anyone in leadership. When working with two or more people, it is important to establish clear expectations of how groups are to work together. Harvey and Drolet's book is laid out in a simplistic format, easy to read, with simple procedural steps to follow to build teams of people to work productively for a common vision. This book was a required reading for me but I would recommend it to any manager, employee and to all organizations who value the team approach. It is an easy read and it puts common knowledge into an easy to follow format. It is very informative and it makes you look at what your place of work does and does not do to help promote a successful environment.

This was a good ending to an amazing series! (But I wish it wasn't the end... :(...) Leith and Renna are still great main characters, but they're starting to get their problems worked out, and in this book, they step aside and Martyn shares the spotlight with them. I loved getting to know Martyn more, as I liked him from the start. There were some pretty funny scenes when he comes a crossed... someone ...as determined as him. ;DIt bears mentioning that this book has references to men and women needing chaperones and several other things like that. It wasn't terrible, but due to this and some torture/fighting/violent scenes, this is not a children's book.One thing that really bothered me (about the whole series), was that this author seems to equate acknowledging God as becoming a christian. At one point a character says when they conclude that there is a God: 'I suppose I'm a Christian now.' No one has prayed and accepted Jesus as their personal savoir, just that he's there. Which was almost enough to give a four star rating, but the story was just so good I had to give it five.

From book 1 when Leith mentions that Martyn is the only person who would care what happened to him, I wanted to know his story. This only intensified through books 2 and 3 when both Leith's and Martyn's choices threaten their friendship. This is finally Martyn's story.We're dealing with the aftermath of book 3. The rebellion is over and a better king on the throne, but for our beloved characters, the hardest part of their journey might be in front of them. Please see the blurb for the tragic details.Leith, Renna, and Brandi continue to shine. Renna and Brandi find their way home and set about rebuilding. Leith finds a real home for the first time and must decide how far he's going to go to protect it. There's a few moments where his past as a Blade rears its ugly head, but generally we're still wanting to give him hugs and telling him to make it right with Martyn.Martyn is also in need of hugs. :) I love seeing him go from a surly sarcastic person to grudgingly doing the right thing to risking it all. Loved his arc, at times hilarious, and at times heartbreaking as we get a closer look into what it was like to serve Respen.We get some new characters, who are terrific. Seriously, I don't think I've disliked any of Tricia's characters. Yes, even the bad guys. :) And there's more of Ranson and Jamie getting to be regular human beings/teenagers, which was a-dorable.The ending was satisfying. The messages tremendous. And everything wrapped up just enough that I'm hoping for some more stories later on down the road.This concludes a fantastic series that I highly recommend if you love Christian fantasy or even just spectacular fantasy in general!

I read Deliver in a day and it was everything I had hoped for. It’s not all that common that you follow the characters after the battle is over and I wasn’t sure how Tricia could top the high stakes of Deny. But she did it. Once the characters have had their happy ending for a moment, the thought of it being lost is dreadful.And then there is Martyn. Leith’s best friend from the Blades. The guy who should have died in his one heroic moment rather than survive. He hadn’t got his happy ending. I wanted hi to have it and even more to know the truth. Tricia did this in such a beautiful manner. Both in the story and in his point of view. He is a sarcastic, cynical character, but so fun to read. Partly because it’s so easy to see what he’s trying to keep from admitting. He’s so close to seeing, but he doesn’t. And now I’m feeling sad,There was also the simple pleasure of seeing how characters have changed throughout the books. Renna had become brave, but now she has become a leader. Not the Leader though, that’s only one person. (in joke) Her and Leith’s relationship has blossomed into something beautiful. It’s the right kind of love, the kind that cares for the other person more. It’s founded on deep trust, not giddy feelings. (but still so adorable)Deliver is a story of friendship, of rebuilding and of upholding what is right. It’s got it’s difficult and scary moments as do all Tricia’s books, but I highly recommend it to ages 15 up. Be warned, though the books are clean as far as language and immorality, there is violence. It’s not gratuitous, but it can get descriptive at time. Medieval war wounds and things of that sort.

I'm not a religious man per say, but you do not have to be religious to get the message. It does not preach at you, but God is prevalent. This series has a great story about struggles, fighting, love, acceptance, forgiveness, and so much more. The characters are what got me, and they are all so alive with their fears, doubts, and hope. In my opinion this series is done exceptionally well. Sorry that this is the end.

Another 5 stars for this series!! It's got it all - swords, revenge, love, redemption, and forgiveness. The characters were delightful. My only criticism is that badly damaged, almost dead people were still able to fight so well - ah, the joys of fantasy!!!The characters are some of the best I've seen (both good and bad). They are well-developed and interesting. Ms. Mingerink, I will be looking for more great books from you! Thanks for entertaining me with good, clean, fun books!

I love these characters so thoroughly. On multiple occasions I really wanted to jump right into the pages to shake or hug one of them.Big theme of this book was trusting God despite the hypocrisy of missteps of His people. People are people, and even after they become children of God are prone to indulging in bitterness and pride. Leith faces this in people's unwillingness to forgive a former Blade, while Martyn's journey revolves around his hurt at being abandoned and his unwillingness to trust--especially Christians and their God.I'm sad to leave Acktar behind, but I'm sure I'll be back for re-reads.
