Rae grew up in a troubled home and vowed she'd never go back after high school, especially after her best friend and boyfriend hurt her so badly. Rae takes on another identity in order to start over and makes bad choices repeatedly. When she finally sees what her husband's character really is, she takes her ten day old son back to her hometown. Brady's moved back home after a disastrous time and takes the job as a Police Detective. He's made some bad decisions after Rae left, but has never gotten over her. When Rae finally reaches home, she knows that she needs to leave soon for their safety. Has she covered her tracks, made it hard enough so that she can't be found? When Brady runs into Rae and sees how frightened she is, he vows to protect her and her newborn. Can he keep them safe? Will Rae ever trust him enough with the whole story? This is a continual "edge of your seat" book that I couldn't put down! The message is to open your heart by trusting God and true friends, even after making bad choices in life. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
If I had to pick just one genre to read, mystery/suspense thrillers would be my choice and this book would be on my "must-have" list for my bookshelf. The description of the book intrigued me, and as I started reading it I wondered how in the world Rae could a) survive, b) bring down an international crime ring, and c) be happily reunited with Brady, her high school sweetheart especially since she was married (I'll just say a great plot twist is involved). Patchen did an exceptional job laying this story out and making all of the details work together with a phenomenal end result! With each step that Julien and his cronies got to finding Rae, I found the hairs on my neck sticking up and my eyes growing wider with angst for her! Truly felt the fear and hopelessness in Rae's situation. But, as I said, Patchen's ability to create a believable story with a satisfying end deserves applause! Loved it and can't wait to read the other stories in the series! This review contains my own thoughts and opinions. I have not been compensated by the publisher or author in any way.
Convenient Lies is the first of Robin Patchen’s books I’ve read and I must say I truly enjoyed it. So much so that I’m already planning on reading the 3 other books in the series, perhaps in a Robin Patchen Binge. Covenient Lies was actually recommended in another author’s email and I’m so glad I chose to take a chance on an unknown to me author.A fast paced suspense thriller, Convenient Lies, takes place in the U.S. where Rae has returned in order to flee her husband, a man she thought she knew. Rae is an investigative reporter investigating the death of her best friend; during her investigative journey she runs into Julien. The attraction is immediate for both Rae and Julien, resulting in marriage just months after their initial meeting. Now just weeks after the birth of their son, Rae seeks to escape Julien and France, but why? Julien is a successful businesssman, who has never displayed any hint of anything other than a loving and devoted father. Yet, previous to the birth of Jean-Louis, their son, Julien became increasingly restrictive in Rae’s access to the outside world and even had hired bodyguards who reported her every move. Then there was his office; why did he keep it locked and why was she forbidden to enter? As an investigative reporter, Rae has a bag of tricks for obtaining information, picking locks is one of them. What she discovers in Julien’s desk drawers causes her to flee with their young son. Will she be able to hide from her husband? And what will he do when he realizes she knows he is not just a business man?
One woman’s desperate need for love and acceptance, coupled with her intense need to expose the truth, lands her in the middle of her worst nightmare. Running for her life, with her young son, Rae McAdams hopes for safety against all odds. Rae has just discovered what her husband’s real occupation is, and “no one leaves the family.â€I downloaded this complimentary copy of Convenient Lies and accidentally opened it. I had no intention of reading it right now, but I was sucked into the story as I perused the first few sentences. This title, Convenient Lies, is the first book of the series, Hidden Truth by Robin Patchen. Though a series opener, it stands alone well. I am anxious to read the next novel in the series. I am sure it will be just as thrilling and mesmerizing.I received a complimentary copy of this eBook from the author. No positive review was required and all opinions are solely my own.
*Spoilers*Unfortunately, I can’t but rate this as is, and it all boils down to momentum. In broad strokes, the story is about, Reagan, a woman with many secrets, who decides to run away from Paris and from her hubby, Julien. In tow is their brand spanking newborn. Well, Reagan, you see, discovered that Julien was not whom he portrayed himself to be and not only that, she also had information that linked him and his family to terrorist activities. She heads back to the US and lands in her New Hampshire hometown, where she immediately reacquaints with, Brady, her high school BF and first love. At this point, Julien had discovered her disappearance, and knowing she can’t ever leave and most certainly not with his son, he embarks on a retrieval mission. What he doesn’t know is that most, if not all, of Reagan’s backstory had been no more than carefully orchestrated lies which makes finding her near on impossible. All of the above transpired before the halfway mark, however, and sadly, the story then sputtered into redundancy with the subsequent 40% revolving around a permanently tearful/crying Reagan, a fearful and inept Brady, and a hungry baby. Between feeding the baby and the crying by Reagan and the lukewarm pseudo love connection with Rea and Brady, the story never gains any meaningful arc.Eventually, and only at the very end, we glimpse a rather lacklustre resolution to the conflict, all wrapped up in a deus ex machina bow. Overall, quite underwhelming.
