Things the book told me:- What an electric bicycle is. It is a bicycle powered by an electric motor.- There are commercially available ones. Kits, or fully assembled.- What an electric motor is. It uses magnets and electrical energy to make itself turn. There are a few different types!- What a battery is. It is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. There are a few different types!- There are advantages and disadvantages to using a lot or a few batteries. If you use a lot of batteries, your bike will be very heavy and accelerate slower than if you had used few batteries. But it will go further, too!Great, but what I *WOULD* like to know is how to hook up an electric motor to a bicycle. That would be really helpful. I read on to page 70. I read on to page 120. I read on to page 170. Onto 240.This is "BUILD your own electric bicycle," and there is not a single practical example of this in the book! There are a few non close up black and white photos of completed builds he copied and pasted from Google Image, and that's it, he didn't post any custom plans, he didn't search for any custom plans to share. He doesn't even get into the basics, like, how do you hook up a motor but retain the ability to pedal? How do you allow the motor to freewheel when coasting is faster than the motor is turning?Oh, he tells you there are hub motors that you can install easily. How lovely, but I want to know how to use plentiful and cheap brushed electric motors, not go out and spend several hundred dollars for what is an expensive pre-made solution, and the only way to accomplish this is with a chain or a belt.Yes, there are friction drives, essentially just wheels jammed on your bike tire, but they destroy your tire and burn up your battery in the process, plus you can just watch a 60 second youtube video to learn how to do that, that is, if you don't want a quality build that will actually hold up. I bought this book hoping for some better information than that!It's like the author compiled every remotely related subject and factoid, but ultimately it's all useless without showing us the step-by-step process of building a bike (he did not have any pictures or diagrams at all of any process, or any part involved in the process) I would have been happy if he had just showed us some blueprints or plans! How hard would that have been to find or make? There are plenty of very detailed guides online available, but it's hard to find quality blueprints or designs you can take to a machine shop to have made for you. I thought maybe since this was an actual book somebody went to the effort to put together and profit off of, surely it would be better than the forums and free articles. No, it is far worse! Far far worse.Do not buy this hoping to learn how to build an electric bike. You will be better off searching forums for free info on how to do that.

I recommend this book especially for those who:-Want to start selling, installing and repairing e-kits on a professional basis, and-Want to go seriously into performance conversions for e-bike races and off-road use-Want to know more about how an electric hob motor is built and worksVery technical and comprehensive, it's not to be read in a couple hours. Somebody mechanically inclined who wants to convert a bicycle to electric without much adoo might want something shorter. Although it has been written mostly for the UK, there are links to websites and forums worldwide inside. All things considered it deserves 5 stars. Hopefully the author keeps updated and will come out with a revised edition as the e-bike technology changes. The Kindle-version (which I got) is well made and the pictures nicely visible.My advise is to download the sample (or use the "see what's inside" feature) and read carefully through the Table of Contents - nothing else. This will give an exact idea of what to expect from the book. The text of the sample (preliminaries, ubiquitous "green talk" and more ubiquitous legal advice*) won't give any idea about what this book is really about. It is much, much more than that!

I wanted a good book covering electric bikes before I would consider buying one. This book more than covers the basics. The author goes into great detail on all aspects. Different motors , Batteries and Controls ETC. This is an especially good book if you have a background in Electronics.

I have read much of this book. It is up to date (2010) and veryknowledgeable, particularly on the electrical side of things.I have read much on Endless-Sphere.com and from a semi-educatedviewpoint DO recommend this book.

This was a good book for me to read. It helped clarify some topics and gave me a much better foundation for a class that I took.

Not enough info on what U.S. Made bike frames to select.Comical author but, too much info on U.K. Resources. I would not have purchased this book if I had known it was not focused on U.S. Resources.

This book is a must for anyone who is going to build an electric bike. He goes into detail on wiring, building battery packs, motor types, connectors, repairing controllers etc. I find it much more practical then "Electric Bicycles, A Guide to Design and Use" by William C. Morchin - which is more of a text book then a how to guide.Matthew Slinn's book is an How Too Guide.

Very good manual for anyone considering building an electric bike. Seems a bit dry at times but like I said Technical Manual. Minor thing, European writer, however most references are in pounds/kilo and English money/dollars. Just a minor thing.Book well written and well edited. Very informative. Will keep using it as a reference manual while building a bike.

This activity book is terrible. Save your money and print the free holiday pages online - they are much cuter and better quality. The pages aren’t even perforated on the sides so they are impossible to remove nicely. And the “activities” have the answers printed on the same page (see attached pictures). Such an unbelievable waste of money.

I guess if you know nothing at all, this would be oky. It really does not have what it says it was. Complete. Really.? NOT even close. A long wait for nothing. I waited 6 weeks. Just to return it. It was not worth the wait. They did say they would return. Another long wait. Still waiting7 weeks later for my refund. Never did get my money back.

Book was useless,showed no techniques,no instructions on outlining,shading,coloring.....just pictures,no how to.....total waste of money

Great book

The book itself is great--a classic in pretty good shape. It does have a pretty strong mold sell though. Something that probably should have been disclosed.

The climbs in Washington and California are known to be delicious and wonderful experiences. I can't speak to the others but themaps, writing and instructions are clear if a little data. Inspiring - this book is a must for anyone who loves to technically mountain climb and experience some of the best nature in North America. Mt. Rainier comes with bears. (we had to wait an hour for the bear to get off the trail at Sunrise), Mt. Stuart has adorable Mt. Goats and some sort of rodents that really like salt.

This book had a major effect on the climbing community when first published in 1981. It's influence continues with the 2nd edition, which has identical content to the original. Very strong on historical perspective, but much of the guide information is seriously out of date, so use more recent information if you're planning on doing any of the climbs.

I love this book. Bought it in Seattle when I started climbing 15 years ago. Many of the routes are really not that crowded. I spent days on end without seeing anyone on several of the routes. WARNING though, earlier comments are right about innacuracy. Abide by topos and trust your compasses -- or bring an extra day's food for some of the north facing routes described.

I'm a teacher and I got this so my kindergarten students can learn about worms. They loved the pictures!

It's not mostly earth tones due to the topic. Worms and grass green and dirt. Red letters on cover are attractive. The book is well researched and informative, educational and offers readers some fun facts, a website address for more facts, a glossary, and index.

The children are obsessed with earthworms. Good followup for the planting we provided at our local elementary school.

My daughter loves this cute, informative book. I'm going to look for other books in this series.

This outstanding play was the deserved winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for best drama. It is a short play with only four characters (a priest, an older nun, a younger nun and a married black female - it was made into an excellent movie in 2008).The title references the thoughts and actions in the play a few different times. It is alluded to in Father Flynn's opening sermon, which takes place in 1964 a few short months after the Kennedy assassination. The second reference is to whether or not the reader (or audience member) believes in the older nun's suspicions or the Father's innocence.The play moves very quickly. There are no wasted lines or dead scenes. The dialogue is fantastic. Despite the older nun's lack of charisma, the lines she utters are a mixture of horrifying, funny and on occasion, wise.

Beautiful writing. Very timely story about a nun who suspects a priest and what she is morally compelled to do vs what she is empowered to do.

The play is really great. I read this play for a college literature assignment and loved it. It's staying in my private library for me to enjoy over and over again.

We used this on vacation in May, 2016. It was fantastic. We carried it around with us and used three of the mapped walks, Old Town, New Town, and Stockbridge. They were great! We ate from mostly the restaurants suggested in the book and that worked out great too.

As always Lonely Planet guides are great for getting your bearings in planning your trip. Great to arrive and already know the highlights to see. I didn't use the guide much while I was on the trip as I already had things planned. Don't remember actually trying any of the restaurant or bar suggestions as I was on a short business trip. I did find that some bus route numbers have been changed (always double check).

Extremely useful and easy to follow series of guidebooks.. If you carry too many different ones, they can add weight to your luggage if that is an issue.. We gave ours away in Europe before flying home, and got in a couple of extra pounds of souvenirs.

This version is not nearly as good as the one I already have, smaller and not as much information. In addition, Amazon charged me full retail of $13.99 for this addition but now lists it on their website for $10.68. So not only did I get an inferior version, I paid top dollar for it.

For many years, I avoided Ursula LeGuin, on the mistaken assumption that she was essentially a fantasy author, by virtue of her Wizard of Earthsea novels. It was not until later that I discovered her science fiction work and grew to enjoy it immensely. But LeGuin is not your prototypical science fiction (or it turns out, fantasy) author. She does not write space opera, but instead focuses on character development and human (or alien) interaction. You could label her work anthropological or sociological science fiction, with the fact that aliens, or space travel, or wizards are involved, becoming almost secondary.This collection of thirteen novellas (very close to short stories) is a perfect example of her writing. There may have been a couple of duds (most particularly Hernes and to a lesser degree Buffalo Gals), but by and large there is good stuff here.Four of the stories involve elements of her Hainish science fiction novels, featuring the planet Weres, where slavery is practiced. In this set of three stories, the reader is taken through a planetary and societal evolution in which slaves are first freed, only to see the women become cultural slaves. Again, only nominally science fiction, to the extent that we are dealing with an alien species in a different time and galaxy.Three other stories are set in the author’s Earthsea world, and while I am not a big fan of fantasy, like her science fiction, this fantasy is not heavy handed with extreme magic and fire breathing dragons. There is magic and there are dragons, but they are very subtly exercised or only mentioned in passing. The story is in the characters and their interaction.The final story, Paradise Lost, is the best in my opinion. Perhaps the most “science fiction” of the lot, it is set on a multi-generational, multi-ethnic starship as it approaches its destination. The story is outstanding as the author explores the various tensions and societal developments that can emerge in an isolated population, five generations removed from any knowledge or empathy for the civilization that launched their voyage; an excellent ending to a very nice collection.

This is a collection of Le Guin's novellas that meshes in nicely with the two volumes of shorter fiction (The real and the unreal) the Le Guin herself selected. Le Guin wrote wonderful science fiction, fantasy and mainstream fiction and all genres are represented here. Her two main series - the science fiction Hainish stories and fantasy Earthsea stories each have multiple selections. There is also the magic realist 'Buffalo girls won't you come out tonight', the stand alone science fiction story Paradises lost, and (probably the least well known story here and the probably the one most likely to have been forgotten but not because it is a poor story) Hernes - the only mainstream story from the Searoad collection.Le Guin's great strengths are her beautiful writing that is both poetic and easy to read at the same time, her interest in characters and society (especially when changing) and these strengths mean she can write anything.My only quibbles are why two stories published here (The matter of Seggri and Buffalo girls...) are also in The real and unreal volumes. There are also two stories not here that I would have thought were novellas - The word for world is forest and The eye of the heron. The first has been been published as a volume in it's own right so that is probably acceptable but the second is in danger of becoming lost.

This thanksgiving I'd like to give thanks for the existence of one of the most wonderful women in Science Fiction.Ursula K. Le Guin. This collection of novellas is sure to blow your mind, over and over again. Everything Le Guin writes is amazing.These stories pack quite a punch, Every story is sure to send the reader into critical thinking mode, or hopeful thinking mode. This woman knows how to make you think, and it is evident that she has done a lot of deep thinking in her time.i especially enjoy her stories on alien civilizations and customs. She has gone to very far lengths to understand a civilization that only exists in her mind, it astounds me.

Overall a very good value (kindle edition) and the stories were all very good. Some overlap with the short story collection (Buffalo Gals and The matter of Seggri). There is a four story series on a slave holding planet and the revolutions that take place --Forgiveness Day, A Man of the People, A Woman's liberation, and Old Music and the Slave Woman -- I recommend these be read in this order. Also the author seems to base the slave holding society on an English heritage model (UK, Canada, US, Australia etc). I am not sure her story would hold up in a more totalitarian model such as Mao's China or Stalin's Soviet Union. Never the less these are all very good stories that make you think. The other Novellas besides the six I mentioned already are Vaster than Empires and More Slow, Hernes, Another Story or a Fisherman of the Inland Sea, The finder, On the High Paradises Lost. These novellas introduce most of the concepts we see in Le Guin's other writings and novels -- though these seem to fill in and not repeat what is in the novels. I think this would be a good introduction to the authors writing style and topics she covers. A major beef I have is that the author did not include any introduction or short summary about the stories. She did this foe her recently released short story collection The Unreal and the Real which is also a great buy. All in all I highly recommend this novella collection.

About the Author

Robert N. Carrow is Professor of Crop and Soil Science at University of Georgia. His degrees are from Michigan State University (B.S. in 1968; Ph.D. in 1972). He has held research and teaching position in turfgrass science at the University of Massachusetts (1972-1976) and University of Georgia(1984-present). Dr. Carrow has concentrated his research position at the (a) soil chemical (nutrients, acidity, salinity) and soil physical (compaction, oxygen, drought) stresses, and (b) traffic stresses (compaction, wear) on turfgrass. He has served in many professional turfgrass manager and scientific society responsibilities. Dr. Carrow is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and is Vice President of the International Turfgrass Society. Donald V. Waddington is Professor Emeritus of Soil Science at Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts in 1964, and M.S. from Rutgers University in 1960, and a B.S. from Penn State in 1953. Following graduation he served for 2 years in the U.S. Army, and worked in the fertilizer industry for 2 years. He taught and conducted research in turfgrass programs at the University of Massachusetts (1960-1965) and at Penn State (1965-1991). He continued his activities for several years following retirement. He served as visiting scientist and taught in the turfgrass management program at Mississippi State University during the spring semester in 1997 through 2000. He has conducted research dealing with soil-related problems on turfgrass areas. Topics included N-source evaluation, soil test calibration, soil modifications and playing surface characteristics of sports fields. His teaching assignments have included courses in beginning soils, soil physics, soil physical properties on turf, turfgrass nutrition, weed control in turf, and turfgrass management. He has served in many turfgrass industry and professional society offices and committees. His contributions have been recognized by various awards and honors including Fellow in the American Society of Agronomy, the Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award from the Crop Science Society of America, and the Dr. William H. Daniel Founders Award from the Sports Turf Managers Association. Paul E. Rieke is Professor Emeritus of Crop and Soil Sciences Michigan State University. His degree are Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1963, and M.S. and B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1958 and 1956, respectively. He joined the faculty at M.S.U. in 1963 and retired in 1999. His research program has concentrated on cultivation, topdressing, and fertilization of turfgrasses. For 20 years he coordinated the turfgrass extension program at M.S.U. His teaching included courses in beginning soils, soil management, and turfgrass soil management, the latter having been taught to over 1600 students. Dr. Rieke has served the turf industry and professional societies in a number of capacities. Among recognitions for Dr. Rieke's contribution as a turfgrass scientist are: Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America; Green Section Award and Piper and Oakley Award from the U.S. Gold Association; Distinguished Service Award from the Gold Course Superintendents Association of America; and Honorary Membership in Turfgrass Producers International.

I've read quite a few books on plants and chemistry and this one gets right down to the point with all the various options on amendments and cautions about application etc... This is all you ever need to maintain your yard's nutrients. It does require a reasonable chemistry background to make sense of this, i.e. advanced chemistry in high school or basic college chemistry. I bought this book after hearing about it on a webcast from [...] and [...] . And I highly reccomend it for hobbyist lawn aficionados.

There is an alphabetical index that implies that it lists all pages where patterns with a particular manufacturer's trademark are located. Unfortunately, this index is not very complete, so it is frequently necessary to look through MANY pages with related brands in order to identify a particular pattern. This is the biggest shortfall of this reference book. Also, some patterns appear more than once, under multiple manufacturers (due to the consolidation of the silverware industry), but other patterns that were made by multiple manufactuers do not appear under each manufacturer. These incomplete multiple listings aren't necessary, but if they remain the pages should be cross-referenced to each.

This is simply the best reference for silverplated flatware identification. I find value guides to be worthless no matter what the product is. If you are looking for present values, go to eBay. If you are looking to identify silverplated flatware by manufacturer or by name (or by illustrated picture), there simply isn't a better tool.

My husband and I make jewelry from vintage silverware. This book has proved to be very easy to use, and yields up the answers I seek about 95% of the time. For a few pieces of flatware we come across, I still have to resort to internet searches. But, overall, I am pleased and very glad I own this. The drawings are very detailed. Great book to own if you just wish to look up patterns.

If you are a collector and/or a dealer in silver plated flatware you simply have to have this book. Even with the internet you could spend literally hours trying to identify a piece and often fail. With this guide you can identify almost any American manufactured silverplated flatware within a few minutes, and have confidence you are correct. And, though the publisher/author may not like it known, you don't need to update this. The values are pretty meaningless but the identification remains the same. Once you have identified the piece/pattern then you go to the internet if you want to see values. Buy it. Use it.

I had been looking for this older edition and found this for a reasonable price in like-new condition. I don't think it had ever been off the shelf. It was perfect for my needs. I received it sooner than I expected, a bonus plus for me!

This is a fabulous resource for pattern identification of Silverplate flatware. I use this book with her sterling flatware ID and value book as well. I actually bought both these books because I wore my last ones out! True!

First and foremost, I’m a contractor and after reading his believe me, I would not have wanted to work on any of hist projects. The saying that art is in the eye of the beholder definitely applies to Le Corbusier’s designs. His wife was right, they were bland and passionless. While he aspired to make living functional for the masses, he vision was clouded with his on narcissistic attitude. Any successful project requires a good working relationship between owner, contractor and A/E. In his case, that would have been an impossibility and then you have him ignored major construction issues with his projects: electrical, HVAC, roofing and plumbing. Throw in cost overruns and you wind-up with a disaster and yet he cared nothing of the problems. They weren’t his. If they weren’t his problems, then whose were they? And then there’s the man himself. His natural demeanor and egotistical approach to life is appalling. A known collaborator with the Vichy Government! For those who aren’t historically up-to-date, that makes him a supporter of the Nazi regime. That alone would be enough to not hire him. Now, were some his designs ground-breaking? Yes and no. I depends how you define ground breaking. His quote masterpieces at Untied d Habitation and Chandigarh led to the greatest disaster to ever hit the US urban infrastructure-the projects. I wouldn’t want that on my resume. Enough about the man, the review is to concentrate on the author’s work. Anthony Flint does an excellent job in providing readers with a wonderful historical walk through Le Corbusier’s life and all the people he came in contact with that would accept his ideas and make him one of the most sought-after architects of his time. Well done, Mr. Flint. Five stars.

The author of this breezy biography of infamous architect Le Corbusier acknowledges as much in his thoughtful summing up of his subject's mercurial life. Le Corbusier (the pseudonym of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris) was a Parisian architect born in a watchmaking town in Switzerland at the end of the previous century. He was brilliant, driven, creative, disruptive, frustrating, infamous, and, for better and worse, he left his mark on architecture and urban design all over the world. A quick internet search will turn up countless images of his more iconic works, from domestic spaces that presage the tiny house movement, to giant and brilliant apartment buildings that foreshadow failed urban redevelopments based on poorly understood imitations, to ground-breaking homes and at least two brilliant churches. His one original building in America is the Carpenter Center at Harvard University, but his influence on American architecture and urban design is both celebrated and vilified to this day. Anthony Flint endeavors in this brief and complex overview to indroduce Le Corbusier to the people who know little or nothing about him, but the book serves also to give a broad context to others seeking to know something about the story behind the buildings. Rather than give us a straight linear narrative, Flint provides chapters that capture themes in Le Corbusier's life, each based on a particular project (i.e. the Chandigargh city plan, or the United Nations building) or period of his life (such as his disturbingly opportunistic collaboration with the Vichy government of World War 2). So the chapters overlap in time, but create a layered impression of this very busy artist. And there is a lot to be said about him. A collection of his complete works runs to eight volumes and over 1700 pages. Flint gives us the highlights, and tries to capture a sense of who the man was, a young artist devoted to his difficult-to-please mother, to the world-renowned starchitect. And to that end, Flint succeeds out of proportion to the size of the book. Le Corbusier comes across as a lively and driven individual, arrogant at times, but modest as befits his Calvinist background. His devotion to a small cabin on the coast of France seems almost cozy and quaint. And yet some of his buildings are among the most monumental of his century. The story is compelling.

The book was enjoyable and an easy read. I would say there really aren't any great insights and the book is a little superficial.
