This is a must read account of what happened to the 'Indy'. I became aware of the story of the Indianapolis back when Captain Butler's suicide made the news. What I learned back then was upsetting; but also not totally surprising. The U.S. military is very good at scapegoating someone for the screwups caused by those who are truly in command. It routinely lands on the back of someone who is below 'flag label's.Some reviews have complained of the 'slant' that the author has in this book. My feeling is that this book needed to be slanted in order to help right a miscarriage of military justice.I was thrilled to find out that the U.S.Navy finally 'owned up' to the fact that they screwed the Captain (and also the crew) in order to cover for the gross negligence of the Navy themselves. There was a good line in the movie of the same name as this book (quite ironically). Henry Fonda said to John Wayne's character regarding blame for losing his ship; "The Navy never admits to being wrong; but in this case, they are falling short of being right". That line had always run through my mind whenever the subject of the U.S.S. Indianapolis came up.The surviving crew members, with a big assist from the author, deserve all the credit for righting this terrible wrong, that has caused unbelievable suffering for so many people for so many decades.

If you said yes to more than one of these questions, you should definitely read this book. And, if you answered yes to all of these questions, you should read this book immediately.This book tells the tale of the U.S.S. Indiana and its fateful journey from SF to deliver nuclear warheads that will destroy Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What happens to the ship and crew after it delivers its top secret cargo is both tragic and ironic. How the "Indy's" men show loyalty and perseverance after the fact brought me to tears and by the end of the book, I was openly weeping.How can a non-fiction book make me weep? Well, I am kind of emotional and prone to tearing up when I encounter loyalty in the face of adversity. But I posit that even the most stoic reader will feel emotional reading this harrowing, gripping and informative account of a little-known side-story of WWII and the Pacific Rim drama that was the conflict between Japan and the U.S.A.

This is easily the best account I've read of this dreadful tragedy. Well written, deeply and well researched, it is a detailed and engaging account of this terrible event. If ever "war is hell" comes to mind, this is it. What is also deeply disturbing, is the Navy's enthusiasm at throwing one of its own right under the bus. The families of the sailors who died under terrible and possibly unnecessary circumstances demanded justice, and so it appears, Captain McVay was the ideal, ready to fry and on hand scapegoat. Anyone has to wonder how on earth the Captain could possibly have avoided being torpedoed by a Jap submarine (considering zigzagging was deemed early on in the war a completely ineffective method of escaping detection). It is shocking to read that the Captain continued for decades after the disaster, to receive such virulent hate mail from family members of lost crewmen that this gentle and capable man sought self destruction. Unquestionably, there were few survivors of this horrible epic event. There are plenty of details in this book that apply themselves to the well rounded and encompassing story of this awful period of WWII. This is the book to read for a truly knowledgeable account of the fated ship, Indianapolis.

EXCEPTIONAL!! The author brought this book to life for me. I had heard of the USS Indianapolis but did not know much about it. Well now I do. He made the men seem like my friends; made me feel as though I was there with them. He explained the depth of the horrors without needless exaggeration. I appreciate that he gave names of officers involved in this unspeakable tragedy and told us what happened (or didn't happen) to each one. The book was so well written and easy to understand. I downloaded this book to my phone, thus whenever I had a spare 30 seconds, I read a few lines. I read and read and read and LOVED this book.

Very well told history of a tragedy that could and should have never been as bad as it was. Even had intelligence been properly relayed it may not have prevented the sinking of the Indianapolis. Those who first learned of the distress signal and choice to ignore it, and those who gave the orders that resulted in ignoring the non-arrival of the very ship who sent the distress signal were the ones who should have been held accountable. Instead the Captain who survived the sinking was court-martialed, causing an unending stream of hate letters from those who died that ultimately lead to his suicide. Mitigating circumstances were known to JAG and deliberately structured out of the court-martial proceedings to avoid wider scrutiny of the Navy Command.

OK, I detest book reviews that proclaim the reader could not put the book down...but this is such a book. Excellently written and fast paced, it puts the reader right in the middle of the action. It does not spend 20 pages laboriously describing the life history of all the players involved but rather injects the reader immediately into the storyline and keeps the drama and suspense active throughout the book. After reading this outstanding presentation of this horrible event you will think twice about complaining about your aching knee or the guy that cut you off on the way to work this morning. Thanks in part to Navy bureaucratic incompetence hundreds of young men spent days in the expanse of the Pacific ocean being menaced by sharks, lack of water and food before they were luckily and miraculously rescued by heroic servicemen that, in contrast to their senior leaders, pushed the envelope and risked their own lives to get these young emaciated, frightened men back to civilization. You need to read this book.

I love love love the story and love the art (specially the coqui with the start). My baby love it too. I will do only 4 stars because pages came out of the book in less than 2 months. They need to work with a better way to put the pages together specially because is a Children book (kids are not always careful like adults). Still paper quality is nice and colorful.

You have to hand it to Green Ronin-- this is a company which knows how to produce excellent GM screens. I also own the Narrators Kit for their Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying Game, and it's another example of a well-organized, sturdy, heavy-duty screen which will be of immediate use to GameMasters and will last for years of play. Seriously, this company sets such high standards with its GM Screens that almost nobody else can even compete with them in terms of quality.This version of the Gamemaster's Kit, for 3rd edition Mutants and Masterminds, includes four reference cards and a turn tracker which can all be written on with wet or dry erase markers. The reference cards are handy for passing around the table (reducing the amount of time spent flipping through rule books), and of course a turn tracker is always useful. There was a previous edition of this Gamemaster's kit which included quick-start character generation rules-- but those rules are now included in the hardback copy of the Mutants and Masterminds Hero's Handbook, making them redundant. Unless you're playing the game with an older softback copy of the Hero's Handbook, which didn't include the quick-start rules, you'll want to pick up the later version of the Gamemaster's Kit so that you get these wet/dry erase cards.As an aside, I run the DC Adventures game, not Mutants and Masterminds, although there is really almost no difference between the two game systems. This product is 100% compatible with either game, even using the same verbiage that is in the rules for either system. I strongly recommend this useful game aid to anyone who plays DC Adventures or Mutants and Masterminds.

It works exactly as advertised. My only complaint (and it is minor) is that the condition tracks aren't part of the MM's screen.

Not a ding against the product itself which is super high quality. Just wish it came with the quick character generator guide like the old version.

These books break down the complex admission process for American colleges and universities into instructions that prospective students and parents can understand.Finally, there are many popular "best fit" guides. These are the college directories more generally inspired by Loren Pope's original COLLEGES THAT CHANGE LIVES, and are based on the idea that the best college for you is the one that fit's best, not necessarily the one with the most recognizable brand or the highest ranking.This book is a superb admissions guide combined with a thoughtful "best fit" college directory all rolled up in one book. The introductory sections on how to play the college admissions game are really good. They're built around a thorough and rigorous process for selecting the right colleges and then building an admissions strategy that is honest, efficient and realistic. I love the way the guide begins with a prospective student's interests and talents and builds an entire admissions strategy and prospective college list based on this. It's effective and, most importantly, credible.Many "best fit" guides are driven by a kind of under-handed elitism. Not so with this book. There's not an ounce of you'll-just-have-to-settle-for-your-local-community-college-because-you're-not-smart-enough-to-go-to-Princeton snobbery in this book at all. I'm skeptical of "best fit" college guides in general, because I think they patronize students and parents by attempting to get them to believe that brand and reputation mean nothing at all. This book acknowledges that there's a place for brand and reputation, but it correctly concludes that "value added" is enormously important to the undergraduate experience. If you get in and drop out, there's not much value added.I would recommend this book to prospective students just beginning to think about college (maybe 10th grade) and to the parents of those students.

...because our grandson loves it! when we gave it to him (I only scanned through it, and not very thoroughly), he looked through it, his face lit up and he said,"This is really cool!" and he's not one to like books. He liked the way the information was laid out and what the information is. He is not one for books, but he immediately started scanning through this one. He is a sophomore in high school, and will need to make his decisions very soon and to have some information about what to do and what to expect. This book seemed to fill his need for the moment. Can't ask for more!

There's so much useful information in this guide that it should be ordered one or even two years before a decisions is to be made. It will answer every question you have about nearby or faraway colleges and universities.

I bought this to pass on to my grandchildren, I looked through it a little, saw that it had good information, hope it helps the kids!

What a great way to begin getting the little ones interested in science and the people who have really made a difference in our world.

Love the idea but when i lookwd at them some of my pages were glued/stuck together and tore so you can't read them. The art is nice and would be perfect but really frustrated that it already got damaged so easily

I have ordered a lot of science and famous person books for my baby and these fell short for me. They are really short and very simple. They are colorful and she liked to play with them but not my favorite.

So happy with my purchase. Very hard not to break open and read prior to giving as a gift.

I was a bit disappointed at small these books are but how thick the pages are. It is overall cute and I am glad I bought it but I am underwhelmed.
