About the Author

Mark A. Snell, PhD, is the director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War and professor of history at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. He is a retired U.S. Army officer and a former assistant professor at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Mark has written or edited several books about the Civil War, including From First to Last: The Life of Major General William B. Franklin (Fordham University Press, 2002). His most recent publication is about the U.S. involvement in World War I and is titled Unknown Soldiers: The American Expeditionary Forces in Memory and Remembrance (Kent State University Press, 2008). During the fall semester of 2008, Mark served as visiting senior lecturer of war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. In February 2009, he was given the Honorary West Virginian Award by Governor Joe Manchin, the highest individual honor the governor can bestow on someone who is not a West Virginia citizen.

A somewhat dry yet detailed telling of the role played by West Virginia, and more precisely West Virginians, in the American Civil War. Perhaps a more accurate title for this book would have been "West Virginians in the Civil War." Not much attention is given to the material conditions that led to the formation of West Virginia: there were a half-million slaves in Virginia, but only 18,000 in the mountainous western region. It's no coincidence that armed opposition to the Confederates arose in the mountains of West Virginia, western North Carolina and east Tennessee and the Tallahoma Swamps in Mississippi. The role that the fight over chattel slavery played in the Civil War is downplayed in this book as is fashionable today. The author tries too much to be objective. That is as inappropriate in this case as it would be in a book on the Jewish resistance in German-occupied Europe. The book closes around the words, "Other than ... the emancipation of an enslaved race of people, there is little to celebrate about the bloodiest war in the nation's history." What other than the emancipation of humanity could be a more worthy achievement? The Confederacy was on the wrong side of history. The tragedy is that Reconstruction was not carried through to completion to uproot and eliminate the vestiges of the southern slaveocracy. Since it wasn't, as Snell writes on page 187, “The Ku Klux Klan made its presence known in West Virginia as well, especially in counties that had been strongholds of secession and Confederate support.” Read Loyal West Virginia by Theodore Lang. I have found this book to be most intriguing. The author does a good job of blending multiple narratives into one readable book of a reasonable size; touching on the development of West Virginia statehood, the local units which served in the war, and the battles fought in the area. All while bringing out the human interest side of the war.In my mind, the most useful aspect of this book is that it is a singular book detailing the battles which occurred within the state. My family and I like to travel to the battlefields and prior to discovering this book we had a mismatch of books and pdfs to provide a narrative. I appreciate the work done here.

Excellent research into both Union and Confederates from West Virginia activities in the Civil War. Highly recommended.

I have read a lot about the Civil War. Being from WV, it was refreshing to see the war approached from the point of view of the formation of the state, the units on both sides and the battles.

This book delves into the actions of various WV units in the Civil War as well as West Virginians serving in the Confederacy. The book was enlighting and interesting, but there was one thing that bothered me. One of the WV units that was involved to a great extent in the war was only mentioned in passing one time. The WV 6th Infantry was very active and deserved at least a passing reference.

Very interesting. A little known chapter in the Civil War. How and why West Virginia was formed. A real brother against brother part of the Civil War.

I like it. I got this book as a supplement to some textbooks I was using to learn MySQL. There was a lot of overlap with the longer texts which was expected and I mostly referred to this book as a way to revisit information quickly and conveniently. It covers the basics in an easy to read format. I recommend it in that context.

I love that this book covers the free MySQL. And, in this case, you get far more than what you pay for. If you want to get your feet wet with SQL there's few better ways to do it. Why, Oh, Why didn't they have this back in the early 90's!

This book is a good extended pocket guide. Not comprehensive to be sure but it has many common usages for the various situations. Layout is easy to access and the font/type size is clear and readable. I commend SAMS for such a useful book. I recommend for anyone getting started in SQL.

I got this having already waded into MySQL by reading things online. I was looking for extra things I had not already taught myself, and a quick reference when I forget how to do some basic things. It serves that purpose well. I have not had problems with out of date things or errors as another reviewer mentioned, but I am not a DBA by any means... I tend to just do simple things in SQL. I am more comfortable in code, so I do big manipulations of data outside the DB in Java or C++.

I disagree enough with a couple of the other reviews that I decided to chime in. I found this to be a kick butt little MySQL primer. I just completed a couple-day LAMP project (where phpMyAdmin alone wouldn't save me this time), and this book provided me with enough information to get 'er done.It's short and to the point. You can (literally) read a couple chapters in a few minutes.Consider it a quick and handy complement piece to the official, online documentation.

I have read only half this book (the first half which is dedicated to beginners database work) and found it easy to read and useful. When I become advanced enough I will read the second half. It includes topics like the SQL off-limits words that you shouldn't use in your database naming fields - which is always helpful (Especially when you are like "I know this function should be working!" and it isn't because you've used something in that list - you won't spend hours trying to debug your code!)I will buy Sams Teach yourself books for other topics again.

Excellent book, if you just want to learn quick without reading a 1000 page book then purchase this and become a master. Concept are well written, easy to understand. I am also teaching my eight year old daughter MySQL at the same time.

This book is based on MySQL 4.0 and some commands don't work on the new version. And this book also has lots of errors. For example, some code (products table)of the sampdb is missing in Appendix B. And it also misses some details so that you have to solve them by yourself.Interesting though.

Education has become so complicated in the last several decades. Often parents don't understand "the testing game." Our students would score higher, I believe, if the rules of "the testing game" were explained to parents. I am one such parent who had no inkling that "the testing game" was so sophisticated and complex.Even without the sophisticated and complex methods and frequency by which testing occurs, this book is a great resource to help parents and teachers introduce -- and students to develop -- critical thinking skills that they will need to be successful not only in school but as an adult. I had difficulty with word problems as a young student. This was decades ago, of course, and so far as I know, such resources as these were not available. Most word problems were surprises to me at testing time. I always tested well, but I recall having difficulty with word problems.This book is a great resource for parents and teachers of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade children to help the students not only develop logic and analytic skills necessary for success but also prepare them for the OLSAT (Otis Lennon School Ability Test), which is given to students to test them for gifted and talented programs, and highly selective schools. The authors take time to briefly explain the why, who and when of the OLSAT, and the skills that it tests for, i.e. verbal comprehension, verbal reasoning, figural reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. The authors provide very helpful section about how to best use the book to prepare for the OLSAT. Interestingly, the book addresses many other issues and skills that the OLSAT and other such tests help score students, such as building confidence, learning the process of elimination, time management, managing nervousness/anxiety, and proper perspective. This book not only addresses these "soft" skills through the two practice tests in the book but it also provides the opportunity to practice and develop the reasoning and comprehension skills that it seems so few adults themselves employ.Each of the two practice tests in this book include 72 questions. The OLSAT time limit is 40 minutes, so students must move right along, even with these practice tests. The questions, although made up of the categories described above, appear to be random, all mixed together (which I presume tests the students' ability to "shift gears" between the problems and skills required). The questions are sufficiently detailed and challenging, particularly for figural reasoning. Of course, answer keys are provided, and thorough explanations of every answer are provided as well. The book also contains one blank answer sheet that, although it is not explicitly stated, can be copied and used to take both tests during multiple sessions. The answer sheet resembles the actual answer sheet used for the OLSAT in that it requires students to use a #2 pencil and fill in the bubbles for the correct answers.One particularly helpful recommendation provided in the book is to use the practice tests to identify areas of weakness and then focus on those types of problems to better develop the student's abilities in those areas.As one expects, the book is professionally printed and bound with full color glossy cover. I saw only a single punctuation error in the book (stu-dent is hyphenated in the middle of a line), though there may be others.

I’m a tutor and was very impressed with the material in this book. It’s a great and affordable tool to help students get acclimated to what is expected of them in the OLSAT entry tests. It’s cheaper and more accessible than similar books I’ve looked at. Even if the student isn’t taking the OLSAT, it’s effective at improving reasoning, problem solving, and test taking skills.I’m going to mainly talk about two features of the book, the excellent introduction and instructions and the thorough answer explanations. If you have no knowledge of what the OLSAT test is or why a student might be required to take it, this is the book for you. It lays out exactly what you need to know to prepare your child or student. It tells you how to best use the practice book and provides numerous strategies for helping your student do their best, both at the practice test and the actual test.There are two levels of practice tests, for both Grade 4 and 5, which definitely adds value as a tutor. The detailed answer explanations are where the value really lies, though. If the book just gave students an opportunity to become familiar with the test format and what is expected of them, it would still be a great resource. But the answer explanations help you and the student understand what the question is asking for and really learn from incorrect answers.

This is an incredibly helpful resource. I love that it includes 2 practice tests. The parts of the book that I found most helpful are Test-Taking Strategies and the Answer Explanations. The Test-Taking Strategies are useful as most students are unfamiliar with the format and types of questions on the test. As a teacher, I find the Answer Explanations also useful because oftentimes it is hard to explain an answer in language the students can understand. The book does a great job with this. I highly recommend this resource to any teachers and parents who have 4th and 5th grade students taking the OLSAT.

Nice to have 2 tests to practice with. However, the front says the test is 40 minutes but the producer of the official test says the test is a minimum of 60 minutes or more depending on which test. That extra 20 minutes makes a huge difference. Not sure where they got the 40 minute rate. Even the ACT and SAT have times of a minute or so per question, so 30 seconds per question for a child didn't even sound right.OLSAT is a good test and these are good for random checks of progress.

This is a great book. However, I paid for 2 practice tests. I did not expect them to be 2 exact same practice tests. Waste of money. Would've only purchased one if that was clearly the case.

If you have a student who is preparing for the upper level OLSAT exam and are looking for a reasonably priced and useful learning tool, then this book is the one for you! This book provides questions that are comparable to the questions seen on the actual exam and they seem to be on the same difficulty level too. I have used this book with many students and it has aided them in receiving high scores.

About the Author

Kelly Cowan started teaching microbiology at Miami University in 1993. Her specialty is teaching microbiology for pre-nursing/allied health students at the university’s Middletown campus. After working as a dental hygienist, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Louisville and later worked at the University of Maryland’s Center of Marine Biotechnology and the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. Kelly has published (with her students) 24 research articles stemming from her work on bacterial adhesion mechanisms and plant-derived antimicrobial compounds. But her first love is teaching―both doing it and studying how to do it better. She is past chair of the Undergraduate Education Committee of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). This book was word for word exactly like the newer edition.I was concerned that I would miss something by getting an older edition,but I'm happy to say I passed this class with an A!!Who can afford a $168 @ the bookstore?I bought this one used for $2.11 used and never missed a beat.

Microbiology is very technical; however, this textbook is written for easy understanding of the microbe world. I would recommend Amazon for your store and this textbook for your education!

This was an okay microbiology textbook. It was not the best nor the worst written micro textbook I have used for class. I was happy with using it for the class I had to have it for because this edition filled in nicely for the newer edition. There may be even newer editions out now. Pretty typical microbiology textbook.

I would give this book five stars except for the fact that the source code is no longer available anywhere that I could find. And the publisher told me that they no longer support it.I thought the projects were excellent and only wish this book had been brought up to date. Some of the projects require some data and I really wish I had it so I could see the completed projects in all their glory. Mr. Birnbaum really knows his stuff.Of course, there are a few errata which, without source code, I had to figure out and correct myself.

This book's subtitle "Professional Projects" led me to believe that the projects would be useful examples easily adapted to typical business situations. I was wrong. The books starts out with a breezy 150-page overview of VBA but then goes into the development of four projects that incorporate the most complex aspects of VBA programming. The first project is enough for all but the most experienced VBA programmer to shelve the book and forget about it. The first project, an excel-html converter, is preceded by three chapters that describe the necessary components for the converter: Custom Menus, Charts and Custom Objects. It is highly unlikely that the average business user is going to expend the time and energy to learn how to create their own custom objects particularly for a project of such little usefulness. The second project is a Data Analysis project incorporating a data exchange with Access and pivot tables. The third project involves creating a stock ticker with internet access and the final project involves automating data analysis and fitting a curve to the data. I did like the format of the book whereby each project is preceded by a couple chapters explaining the components (excel objects) that make up the project but those chapters are not in-depth enough for the casual VBA to fully grasp what is going on. The projects themselves are suited for an experienced users or those seeking to become serious VBA programmers. For the business user I recommend instead Albright's VBA for Modelers.

I agree with the previous critique. I came to this site after purchasing the book and I should have come before I purchased it. I access the site to see if I was the only one of the opinion that this book was not a guide to learning Excel VBA for beginners or even intermediate Users.It seems as if Mr. Birnbaum is trying to impress us with this knowledge of Excel as opposed to guiding us through Excel VBA. The projects are much harder than they need to be. I realized that in the "compare workbooks" project.If you are an advanced Excel VBA programmer this book might work for you. What Mr. Birnbaum fails to realize is if you are an advanced user he has no need to inundate you with the first 10 chapters of information. If you are not an advanced User then the projects need to reflect that.

It is one of the few books that I have chosen to study rather than decorate my bookshelf with. There may be a bit of a learning curve involved but it is very well written (quite smooth for a technical book). It probably does help if you have a little programming backgound, but otherwise you just gain more from learning more. The examples - 3 broad tutorials are also well and broadly chosen (for me ) across business model, web programming and stock screening scenarios. This is not some candyfloss - it is a well written introduction to a good analysis tool. I am grateful to this author. Challenge this book and come out $$$ ahead

This book is whht you need if you like to have some guidelines and references of sofisticated xls vba models.I wasted so much time looking small parts of code online before getting this book. I really loved it.

Nice first book in this new YA/NA UF series. There is a (free) prequel, Penumbra, that you can read beforehand. It isn't necessary to have read it, you do get caught up pretty well in Shadow Magic, but I think it would be helpful to read it first - it's not a long novella.This time there are minor gods/entities being killed, which creates a rift in the environment and the system, and the Lorica are investigating. Dustin gets to brush up on his shadowstepping and learn some magic creation as well. Oh, and there are portals. Everyone seems to like Dustin. He's charming, and good looking - just ask him, he'll tell you. He's still reeling from his premature and nasty death and coping with the new world he finds himself in, but he still cruises past his dad's house and wishes he could go in and tell him he's okay. It hurts to see his dad obviously grieving.The same characters in Penumbra pop up - lovely, kickass Prudence and handsome, motorcycle riding, and annoying-to-Dustin, Bastion. Thea, Dustin's Lorica boss. Herald the archivist/alchemist. Vanitas the telepathic sword, and quite a few new characters, like Gil the werewolf, Sterling the vampire and their... interesting boss, Carver.All in all I’m really enjoying the Darkling Mage world so far. It’s a good series for YA/NA and adult readers alike. I’m very much looking forward to book #2. I hope the author brings it and doesn't spare any action - for better or for worse. You better believe I’m counting on it all. Mwahaha!!

Great book, it reads very smooth. The story is entertaining and you want to know what will happen to Dustin. There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, but with this story, you allready (I do at least) know you want to read more about him. As I understand it, this is a first for this writer - as I could not find any others - so I have to say: WOW, keep it up.Thank You mr. Noor.

The premise for the book hooked me. Its an intrequing world. There is alot here to work with that the book could have been excellent. But it wasn't much more than mediocre. The hero interacted with both his world and ours at the oddest times creating a jarring effect to me. I never really got that feeling that it flowed. Normally a book will drag you thru it in sections. A really good book does it more than not. I had to set this book aside 6-7 times just because I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish it. In purchasing the book, I read the authors blurb that states hes been writing for 18 years. This reads like its a first attempt. After I finished, I read thru the other reviews to see if it was just me. I'm not sure if we read the same book. Including the one that equated biting of the lips to be a bisexual indicator. Anyways.... I finally felt compelled to write a review. Although its not a good one in any shape or form. I do hope the writer matures a bit into his storyline and book #2 is worth poking at. I'll read the reviews first this time.

I LOVED this book!I will preface this by saying that I don't usually read Urban Fantasy, nor do I read first person written works. But knowing Nazri's style of writing, I decided to give it a shot. I'm so damned glad that I did!The way the book unfolds, you cannot help but feel like it's going on around you because of how immersed you get into Dustin's world. Dustin Graves. That gave me a chuckle right there.Dustin's world was so real, through how Nazri describes it, that you can easily get lost for hours along with the characters. Without giving too much away, there are some parts of the book that have you laughing, while others have you gripping your reader so tight because of the tension. I'm usually a bit jaded, and can usually 'get' the plot twist before it's revealed. But Shadow Magic had me guessing all wrong, and it truthfully shocked me when the truth came out.This is an amazing book, with vivid, wonderful characters. Definitely a must read!

OMG!! This book is action packed and chock full of magic. At the center of the action is a bumbling newbie, Dustin Graves. Dustin was murdered but came back to life. He has become a Hound working for Lorica (a paranormal policing agency). His job is to steal dangerous magical objects so they can be neutralized and contained. He has the ability to step in and out of shadows. But he is more, so much more and there are those who would use him for evil purposes.

this is such an amazing, fresh take on magical worlds. Combining a touch of Lovecraftian influence with a fresh, young, charming shadow walker. Various types of magicians and creatures in a very fun and intense story. Well worth a read! (And the author himself ain't half cute! )

Overall very enjoyable read. Did a good job doing just enough world building without monologuing too much. Some of the background material could have been enhanced with some flashbacks, but I also appreciated that this author didn’t over rely on those like some. I’d recommend this book to those who like urban fantasy.[not really spoiler to follow but discussing character dynamics]My only issue was that I thought it somewhat unrealistic the main character would develop such tight relationships at his workplace after only a month. Seemed an odd choice. If the author had said the character was there for 6 months, maybe, but I my expertise most relationships, especially at work, take that or longer to be built. Not that big an issue as many do still treat the main character as the “new guy”.

Terrific character development and pacing of the story. The book lagged for the cost few chapters, but the development was just getting started, recovering from surgery and can't get up, so looking forward to the next story.
