This is a wonderful art book for a spellbinding animation series. Making the series took 6 years, hundreds of artists, and hundreds of thousands of drawings. This book showcases a selection of some really beautiful illustrations. There are loads of character and background designs inside, in sketches and in their finished coloured form. The main characters like Aang and others come with cool animation sequences created with pencils. Also included are many of the discarded concepts which were difficult to animate or doesn't suit the story. Appa had some really awesome spiral horns but were discarded, unfortunately. The character drawings are superb. Just by looking at their different expressions you can pretty much guess their characteristics.Besides the characters which includes the town folks and soldiers, there are also drawings for many miscellaneous stuff like storyboards, airships, hybrid animals, wanted posters, promotional posters, chibi (or super deformed) style and random doodles from meetings.Did I mention the background paintings? The world created is so beautiful! The whole book is annotated heavily by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. They talk about everything on production, from creating the pilot episode to Nickelodeon approving the final season. You can see and read about their influences and inspiration everywhere, from Buddhism, Studio Ghibli, Gainax, Chinese martial arts, etc. It's very interesting to see how they apply what they learned from research to their drawings and animation. This is a fantastic art book for the series and fans, which should appeal to anyone who hasn't watch the series. Good art appeals to all.Highly recommended!(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
I've amassed a small collection of art books, and while this one is not the most jam-packed with full-color-render finished pieces, it is actually my favorite so far. Granted, I may be biased as Avatar is one of my most beloved cartoon series, but I am huge fans of other movies/shows that have art books as well, and this one definitely stands out. One thing I love is having Bryan and Mike, the two original creators of the show, narrate basically the entire book. The other thing that really brings it together is how the art book has a natural progression from the first spark where the idea of Avatar was born all the way up to the series finale. The creators also gave tons of credit to the artists and animation studios that worked on this series. As an artist myself, I felt as if I was immersed in the entire production of the cartoon. Great for anyone who wants a more in-depth view on the world-building process of Avatar; it is definitely not just an art book with a bunch of pretty, full-page concept art (although I do like those kinds of art books as well).
As with every other Avatar book--kids are enamored. This is the last in the series and my 8 year old read it in a day. She actually just re-read all 5 library editions (15 books--I think--if you buy them separately). I don't know if I mentioned this in prior reviews of the first 4, but the library edition is the best way to keep these organized, clean, not shredded/ripped, not lost, without gum stuck to them or floating in a bathtub...etc. Because they're big, hardcover and heavy and they're so pretty the kids actually put them away on their own. Totally worth it.
Everything about these comics are fantastic. The book in itself is beautiful and definitely worth the money. I'm sad to see Team Avatar's story end but I'm glad I have all of these library editions and TV show on DVD so I can relive the magic over and over again. This book is great because it does incorporate a lot of things that lead into Korra. Especially the bad blood between the North and the South.I'm so incredibly thankful to have had this growing up and to have this now. The wisdom built into this unique story will stay with me for a long time.TEAM AVATAR FOREVER!
Discovering the ATLA series is why I seriously started believing in the power of cartoons again. The graphics is truly spectacular, the stories spellbinding (and if you don't have a great LOL in at least each one, then I don't know anymore), and seriously every part of the cartoon itself sticks to you for a very long time. These are reasons why I got caught up in the series, and even prompted me to buy this artbook. If you are into drawing and all that stuff, this is a great book of references in drawing some of the most-loved (and not-so-loved) ATLA characters. I personally use it to find inspiration in making sketches as well as just simply staring at the high-quality artwork of the animated series. Just because. So if you are into the ATLA series, someone who likes drawing people, places, and other stuff, or in my case seriously into both things I highly recommend this artbook for you. Happy reading!
Honestly, I waited way to long to purchase this book. I had already read the first three art books of Korra, and had forgotten this one, which was a shame. So I finally gotten around to buying this book, WOW! This is SOOO much more than just an art book. It's nearly a novel haha. This goes through the entire history of creating the TV show, this shows you just how much work went into this show, and how much was on the line. I am ecstatic after reading this to continue with the series. This book is truly a master piece, and a must have for any fan of Avatar. It fills in all the blanks, answers all the questions (Except for Ursa, who is explained in The Search, go check it out!), and gives you sooooo much detail. I will cherish this book forever!
