Nym Cooke began studying shape-note music over forty years ago as an undergraduate at Harvard, and it is not an overstatement to claim that he has made this study his life's work and himself among the foremost authorities on the subject. Beginning his research in 1976, he has sung ever one of the 5,000 pieces published in American tunebooks through 1810, researched the composers' biographies, and determined not only how the music should be presented in print, but also how it might best be performed in person. "American Harmony," his magnum opus, is the result: a selection of the cream of early America choral music, here published in two volumes, the first covering New England compositions from 1770 to 1815, the second volume covering a wide range of locations form 1813 to the present.

American Harmony is a wonderful work to be enjoyed by anyone who cherishes the joy of early American harmonies. These books are very well designed, from their usability to their guidance on conducting. The CD alone is a wonderful journey through the beauty that harmonies can exhibit. This is a masterful work for no other reason than the passion that willed it into being. It includes numerous images of the original sheet music, and is very usable for current-day performances. As an owner of this work, I can honestly say I am not disappointed and am joyful to have it in my library!
This is the most thorough collection of shape note music available! Any person or choir interested in this type of music, or in exploring a kind of music they may not have been that familiar with, will find this stunning set of two books invaluable - not only does it include tons of songs, but it gives interesting information about the composers. I think what I love most is that there are great specific hints about ways for conductors or leaders to make the pieces come alive! Mr. Cooke's obvious passion, knowledge, and choral directing experience are what make this book set even more exciting! Annie B.
