Nondualism by Michael W. Taft is a helpful short overview of the philosophy of nondualism like his subtitle says it is a timeless concept. His book is a less than 100 pages, but it’s a very good overview. Michael provides teachers who are non-dualist intraditions as well as teachers that were not part of traditions. So there are plenty names of teachers to find out more about. I am 66 years old, when I was in high school I started my search for the Truth. I was raised as a Christian-- neither of my parents were real religious-- my mother thought it just would be good to send her children to go to Sunday school. A year after college I entered Union seminary but I dropped out after one month because I was reading Thomas Merton, D. T. Suzuki, Alan Watts and Jiddu Krishnamurti. I drove from New York to California to hear Krishnamurti talk in Ojai, California. I have spent my whole life searching for the Truth. My career was as an English professor, but when I was 52 I suffered a massive stroke, I lost the ability to walk and to read. Today I walk with a cane and read around a senior level in college. I have read all the important teachers from most all the different spiritual traditions. The ultimate truth I have found in Krishnamurti’s work. Krishnamurti hated labels, but I would agree with Michael that K was a nondualist. The main idea in nondualism is that Reality is all One. That means on the surface we definitely see differences, but on a deeper level all life is one. Non-duality came out of the Vedic, Hinduism. Also, exist in the Western tradition in Neoplatonism founded by Plotinus who notion of "the One" had a huge influence on my life.Michael talks about neti-neti “not this, not that.” Perhaps the most important idea in the philosophy of Nondualism which basically means that you cannot defined Truth. Every time you try to say what Truth is you are limiting it. It’s like the important Zen idea that you can point at the moon. But the map is not the territory. Non-dualism is true to me.Sincerely, Ralph Edsell

Michael Taft’s brief guide was a perfect overview for me, a daily meditator with roots in the Vipassana tradition. I now have a basic understanding of Nondualism (“the philosophical and religious concept that all things are essentially one,” as defined by Taft) and its place in the history of spiritual thought; it is a jumping off point for me to dive into detailed histories of Nondualism in Eastern and Western thought. I highly recommend this to anyone in a Nondual practice who would like to see how Nondualism fits into other traditions.

The author has a deep and profound insight into non dualism as a philosophy and teaching, but seems limited in his ability to communicate his understanding. The book is of very limited value due to how short the text is. Topics are covered so briefly that the information is not really adequate. His understanding of Christianity barely addresses the topic. For example, Christ has been seen as a teacher of non dualism by modern authors such as Robert W. Wolfe. The book could be excellent if expanded into an adequate length text.

Michael Taft's book is a fantastic introduction and exploration of Nondualism. Great for those already on the path, or those who are just beginning. I'm looking forward to more from Taft!

Great overview, but kinda short, just like the author said.

Exellent little book. I enjoy reading this a lot. I am recognizing a lot in my experience. I am learning a treamendous lot and it is deepening my experience. 35 Years ago I have been in a class to study Shankara. Now I can defenitely relate to his thoughts on nonduality. Very cool book!! Thanks Michael!! The unpretentious way of writing makes this history very accesseble.

Great! :)

I expected this book to be more comprehensive.
