Mean parents? Not everybody will like me?Kids won't remember all of my message points? The elder board might not think turning the baptismal into a hot tub is a good idea!? OH MAN!Maybe you're like me (a new youth leader) and you have a crazy list of "must read" books and you have no idea where to start. I know the feeling folks (I'm there right now). But one book that everyone agreed that I start with was this book.I was stepping into a ministry where the demographic difference (education, church background, age) was so different I had no idea where to start.Do I host a huge event? Tell stories? Go through 1 Chronicles!? AHHH!Doug Fields put together a very helpful, practical and honest book. The entire book is put together in a readable way. With writings from both Doug Fields and other ministers from around the country who are in the battlefield right now. The contributing writers do more than validate, but they relate the topics to their real world experience. Finally a book with more than just concepts and theories!First you'll probably read it straight through, but afterwards it will turn into a quick reference book. If anything just to re-affirm how you're going to handle a difficult situation. As a single new minister, I felt absolutely clueless about parents. What do they really want from me? A couseler? A listener? A babysitter?Doug very clearly lays out what parents need from you and how you can pour your life into their's without telling them how to raise your kids. I loved it when he talked about parents being experts on their children, so don't treat them like an idiot when you don't agree with how they want to raise their own children. It is because of this book that I have already learned ways of forming relationships with distant parents, learned how to find the needs of my attending kids, and build a foundation for a relationship based ministry.I would have paid 10 times the price for this book. The wisdom of these pages are truly beyond value for me a new minister to kids.

This is not a "how to" guide directing you what to do or how to lead your group. It is a book that discusses the pitfalls and dangers of leading, and how you as a youth leader can avoid those traps. This book has given me a tremendous amount of confidence as a youth director. I've been working in youth ministry for 4 years, and I wish I'd read this earlier. It is extremely helpful! Highly recommended. This isn't for just youth pastors, or people who are interested in ministry. It is extremely helpful even for people who just want volunteer once a week. Great book! Very practical and applicable!

I will refer back to this book over and over throughout the years. I may get a hard copy, however. The kindle edition was difficult to follow. I imagine the hard copy of this book has small blocks with quotes from various youth ministers scattered throughout the pages, but in digital form there are no blocks, meaning that you see quotes stuck in the middle of paragraphs for no apparent reason or indication that the speaker has changed.

This book is a very relatable and helpful resource. There were many times that I was reading about issues that come up in youth ministry and I felt so much relief knowing I wasn’t going crazy thinking those very thoughts! For that and many practical helps, this book was an encouraging and entertaining read. The book is a bit broad and operates from more of a large church context, but it is an essential resource that will help any youth leader have a healthier ministry and confidence in their role during there first few years of youth ministry. With so few voices able to speak into our lives as youth pastors, leaders, directors, volunteers, about the ministry, why not let a “voice from the trenches” speak to you.

This book is very honest. I decided to pick up this book and I was blown away when I realized I'm not the only one who gets discouraged and feels like giving up from time to time in this ministry. This book is also practical. It reflects off of real-world situations and events so you can actually relate to it. I would recommend this to both new youth leaders and volunteers to even the most seasoned youth worker!

I was hired part time by my church 8 months ago to be the student minister. I had been a volunteer for a few years in a ministry that had no official youth pastor. With two degrees in music performance, I said yes to the church because they saw my interaction with the youth and I saw a need and enjoyed interacting with the teenagers. Thank you for this book. There were so many times when reading it, I thought, "Hey! I'm actually doing that!" Or "well no wonder that didn't work." This book is so encouraging, motivating, humbling, discerning and eye-opening. I will refer to it over and over again. Thank you so much.

Doug Fields' Your First Two Years in Youth Ministry was an interesting read. It was pretty enlightening in the field of youth ministry overall. I had to read it for a college class, and I expected it to be a shallow, uninteresting read. I was very wrong. Fields has a lot of great advice to offer those wanting to get into youth ministry (or those already involved but looking for advice) thanks to his many years or service in youth ministry. It was a very accessible read and the insight provided will doubtlessly be valuable to those looking for a solid primer on working in youth ministry. I recommend it due to its breadth of information and the fact that it in no way overcomplicates anything.
