What a wonderful debut novel. Writing was very clever and witty and, the hero of the story make me swoon so hard. I have been waiting for this book for a month before it released because the author put A bit of the first chapter on her website. I fell in love with the way she written it. Writing totally won me over, and I wanted to buy the book as fast as I could.Devlin and Sophie, I absolutely love the interactions between them even in the first chapter. They were so cute with one another even know basically they never thought they would fall in love.Devlin is known as the ’Devil Duke’. He had a tragic past which you must read about I do not want to spoil it it is very very good. Especially the way he separates himself with other people it does explain a lot why he wants to to not get too close to someone. He was very charming and I have to say he’s one of my top book heroes now.Sophie, I loved her so much. She was a strong female character. It was very cute how she came to trust the charming Rake. Just watching her interactions with DevlinWas quite amusing. I chuckled at some of the comebacks they jutted at each other. But another sweet thing is she brings out the best in Devlin. Both are afraid to love in different ways. But it was quite sweet seeing them when they did get along with each other, and slowly start to fall for each other! And peace by piece they broke down each other’s barriers and started to love!And I also loved all of the side characters! Really loved Sophie’s aunt and brother!Of course this book has action, there’s a killer on the loose and, he absolutely wants revenge. I thought I knew who it was.. But the author surprise me. I was actually scared for the characters at the last inning chapters ,and I have to say it squeezed a tear out of me.And the ending chapter made me want to hug my Kindle. But I like going to spoil it. You just have to read it for yourself!I recommend this if you absolutely love historical romance with a hint of action. I await the next book that the author plans to write. I will happily reading because I highly enjoyed the cleaver writing in this book!Brava!
With all the 'Duke' books to there, I'm going to try and convince you to choose and read this one because you will love the heroine and hero and become entangled in a love story with twists and turns and danger that will lead you to a wonderful HEA. Sophie is a lovely young lady with a mind of her own and who loves a man she can't have. This makes for a sparkling introduction because she proceeds to fall out of a tree and meet the hero, Devlin. If I had to name only one thing is this book (and there are many) that kept me turning the page, it would be the interaction between Sophie and Devlin--especially their conversations. When Devlin realizes he needs to marry, Sophie is the first one he thinks of and he literally bribes her into it (not that she really needs bribing...). But there is danger afoot and a maid servant disappears, a young woman raised in an orphanage owned by Sophie's family. Sophie is determined to find out her fate. She inadvertently places herself in the sites of the villain. I didn't see some of the twists and turns coming and one specifically took me by surprise! I love when historical romances add the flavor of a mystery and danger in the plot, and The Devilish Duke does this really well. I highly recommend Maddison Michaels book for anyone who loves romance with a twist of mystery.
The concept of the story was good. Devlin was a great devilish duke. Seeing him change and grow through out the story was nice. Sophie began the story as self centered and too quick to act without thought. She did not change as the story progressed. Because she did not grow as a character, it was hard to finish the story. Devlin deserved better.
I really liked this book, it was a bit slow in parts but for the most part it was an enjoyable read....We first meet our lovely heroine Lady Sophie up a tree. Truly. Spying on a proposal. She literally falls to the ground in front of our Duke. It’s quite the meeting....It’s a meeting they both think about often after.Flash forward, the Queen wants Devlin married. As his reputation as the Devil Duke, Queen Victoria has had it with his reputation. He cannot do his Telegraph trade until then. He must marry.His only choice is Lady Sofie...Neither ever wanted to marry but....He pursues her relentlessly, lol. She’s shocked but not immune. (Who can resist a Devil Duke that leans against door-frames upon every entrance, yum that visual, lol).He does some under handed things including winning her beloved charity property for the orphanage in a wager to win her.The story and romance takes off from there, including a mystery surrounding a maids death that meant something to Sofie. To solving a murder of Devlins parents. (His background reminded me a bit of Ian from Almost Heaven).The slow build on the romance was great, I would of liked more at the end. I could have had steamier and yet I found myself smiling at some of their antics. The verbal sparring between the two in this book was fun.I’d love to see her brother get a book! I’m also positive we need one for Sofies first choice love, as we know he’s not stopped looking into his wife’s death.All around a solid debut historical from this new author.Recommend.
