Review
"Wisdom, Attachment, and Love in Trauma Therapy provides a sophisticated and compassionate understanding of how trauma therapists experience, train, and contribute to the healing of their heroic clients. In this well-written and integrated book, Susan Pease Banitt conveys a conceptual framework integrating principles extracted from contemporary neuroscience, psychology, and philosophic orientations to emphasize the features of successful therapy. Through her personal experiences, she emphasizes the importance of the therapist being present with and accepting of the client. Perhaps most relevant to the trauma therapist, she provides a deep understanding of the vulnerabilities of the therapist, who may be a survivor of trauma." Stephen W. Porges, PhD, distinguished university scientist and founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium, Kinsey Institute, Indiana University, and author of The Pocket Guide to The Polyvagal Theory: The Transformative Power of Feeling Safe "Susan Pease Banitt offers us more than a book; this is a mission statement on how many of us who work to bring healing to the wounds of trauma really feel about the state of our field. Pease Bannit, an expert at her craft, shares her much-needed voice as she teaches on one of the great clinical imperatives: it’s the relationship that heals. Practical, useful and integrative, any clinician working in trauma healing ought to have a copy of this book to develop in the art of this work." Jamie Marich, PhD, LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, REAT, RMT, author of EMDR Therapy and Mindfulness for Trauma-Focused Care, Dancing Mindfulness: A Creative Path to Healing and Transformation, Trauma Made Simple, Trauma and the 12 Steps, and EMDR Made Simple "In this book, Susan Pease Banitt is able to integrate psychosocial history, cultural diversity, interdisciplinary sciences, interfaith spirituality and good old-fashioned common sense. She synthesizes complex information in ways that make sense of clinical chaos without resorting to reductionism. Her work has very practical applications beyond theory and empowers healing processes for clients and therapists alike. Pease Banitt's brilliance stands out above the rest because her personal and professional lives are congruent and lived with a high level of integrity." Ericha Scott, PhD, LPCC, ATR-BC, keynote speaker, creative arts psychotherapist, consultant, globally published researcher, and theorist in peer-reviewed journals "Susan Pease Banitt bravely challenges outmoded mindsets that have never served us as we work to heal trauma survivors. She asserts that our clients need to feel loved, that there is a place for touch in psychotherapy, that dissociated and later recovered memories are normal responses to trauma, and that we need sit in belief of what our clients tell us, including ritual abuse and trauma-based mind control." Ellen Lacter, PhD, licensed clinical psychologist, registered play therapist, marriage and family therapist, past president of the California Association of Play Therapy, academic coordinator of the Play Therapy Certificate Program at the University of California, San Diego Extension

Academic books on "how to be" a therapist can at times be filled with too much jargon or feel like you just need to read the first chapter and the last. I purchased this book because the nature of my work as a therapist leans towards working with trauma survivors. The book is divided into sections as the title suggests, "Wisdom", "Attachment", and "Love." If you have completed a degree in counseling (social work, psychology, MFT, etc), much of what is written in the first two sections are generally covered in core courses. What is different here is Banitt narrows the scope of which therapist this book is for, those working with trauma survivors, in particular, those with extensive trauma histories. In this sense, if this is an introduction to someone who has not already worked with trauma survivors, then these sections are essential to review because it adds components related to trauma work not generally covered in an overview class. Trauma work with clients requires a great deal of energy and expertise on the part of the therapist, and the message is clear, if you work with trauma survivors, then be ready to put in the work. Emotional work. Self-therapy. The catch-all phrase "mindfulness practice"...think Tara Brach. And all this is fine, if you are only looking at a client in terms of their "trauma". As with many books written by therapist from more privileged positions (at one point, she notes she does not accept insurance for her therapy practice), it fails to bring more nuance to the need for cultural competency and understanding of intersectionality and trauma. This is where this book would have been a new voice to the literature that is already out there.Banitt does mention "cultural competence" peripherally, so it's not totally devoid of this.I do want to say what made me purchase this book was that "Love" is a central component that she tackles sometimes a bit clunky but necessarily for those who do work with trauma survivors. She uses love as a verb here, and I think this is the most important message to get from this book. Banitt asks therapists to truly "love" clients and all their needs because so often safety, born out of love for other human beings, is missing or broken from the trauma survivor. It would be interesting to hear how this book will be taught in therapist training programs/degree programs, and how others might develop more thoroughly, guidelines, a general map,...on helping trauma survivors from all walks of life in culturally competent ways, that do not forget their intersections, and how that impacts more (or less) trauma survivor's ability to heal.
As a therapist we rarely talk about this important information. Much needed.
I read this book toward the end of the summer and as I look back on the readings to write this review, I’m revitalized. I remember how inspired I felt each time I ended a chapter. She describes characteristics of a well-rounded therapist that is not limited to Western concepts and textbook applications. While she honors and skillfully describes neuroscience and the importance of continued learning, the author explains how wisdom-based practices enhance healing in the therapy session. Simply said, intelligence and theory are ineffective unless it’s encompassed by wisdom. Wisdom, Attachment, and Love in Trauma Therapy fuses such concepts together to provide a basis for wholesome therapy. As an added touch, Susan weaves together personal experiences and a subtle sense of humor that help the reader feel more connected to material and the author herself. I will pick this book up time and time again.
Amazing book! Filled to the brim with wisdom, experience and true compassion. I am so inspired reading this, both in my profession as a mental health nurse and as a buddhist practitioner.
